Το ζαχαροκάλαμο πλένεται για να δημιουργήσει χυμό, και έπειτα βράζεται για να δημιουργήσει σιρόπι ζαχαροκάλαμου. Ένα δεύτερο βράσιμο δημιουργεί μελάσα.Μετά από αυτό το σιρόπι βράζεται για τρίτη φορά, ένα σκούρο ιξώδες υγρό αναδύεται ως μελάσα blackstrap.
