H αρώνια είναι ένας φυλλοβόλος θάμνος με στρογγυλούς μαύρους καρπούς.
Καλλιεργείται ως καλλωπιστικό φυτό και για τροφή. Οι καρποί μπορούν να φαγωθούν ωμοί, η γεύση τους είναι στυφή. Μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν για την παρασκευή κρασιού, μαρμελάδας, παγωτού, τσαγιού, μπίρας, σιροπιού, χυμού, ορεκτικών και αλκοολούχων ποτών με εμποτισμό
Οι καρποί της χρησιμοποιούνται στη φαρμακοβιομηχανία καθώς περιέχουν πολλές βιταμίνες και ιχνοστοιχεία. Μειώνει την αρτηριακή πίεση, προλαμβάνει καρδιοαγγειακά νοσήματα, μειώνει τα επίπεδα των ορμονών του στρες, αντιμετωπίζει ουρολογικές λοιμώξεις και λέγεται ότι έχει αποτέλεσμα στη θεραπεία του καρκίνου.
