Το Ιπποφαές είναι φυλλοβόλος θάμνος που ανήκει στην οικογένεια των Ελαιαγνοειδών.
Πάρα πολλοί επιστήμονες το κατατάσσουν στη πρώτη δεκάδα των πιο θεραπευτικών φυτών στο κόσμο και όχι τυχαία. Αναλύσεις έχουν δείξει ότι περιέχει περίπου 15 φορές περισσότερη βιταμίνη C από ότι περιέχει το πορτοκάλι και όχι μόνο.
Οι μικροί σφαιρικοί καρποί του έχουν υψηλή περιεκτικότητα σε βιταμίνη Ε, σε βιταμίνες του συμπλέγματος Β, σε ακόρεστα λιπαρά οξέα ω-3, ω-6 και ω-7, σε καροτενοειδή, παντοθενικό  οξύ και διάφορα αμινοξέα. Συνολικά έχει υπολογιστεί ότι σε όλα μαζί τα μέρη του φυτού εντοπίζονται 190 πολύτιμες ουσίες. Όλα τα παραπάνω καθιστούν το ιπποφαές μια «πηγή» δύναμης και υγείας καθώς η χρήση του παρέχει ισχυρή αντιοξειδωτική, αντιμικροβιακή, αντιφλεγμονώδη και επουλωτική δράση.
Αν και η γεύση των καρπών του μοιάζει με εκείνη του ανανά, για πολλούς η κατανάλωσή τους σε νωπή κατάσταση δεν είναι ευχάριστη, επειδή έχουν αρκετά όξινη γεύση, και γι’ αυτό χρησιμοποιούνται για την παρασκευή χυμού – άλλωστε οι Κινέζοι τον χρησιμοποιούν στη διατροφή των αθλητών τους στους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες ως ενισχυτικό του οργανισμού. Ο χυμός του επίσης χρησιμοποιείται σε μείγματα χυμών με άλλους καρπούς, ενώ οι καρποί του αξιοποιούνται σε μαρμελάδες, σε παγωτά, σε γιαούρτια, σε γλυκά, σε σάλτσες και σε λικέρ που έχουν εξαιρετική γεύση.
Τέλος, το ιπποφαές είναι ιδανικό και για το αδυνάτισμα καθώς περιέχει όλα τα απαραίτητα θρεπτικά συστατικά για τον οργανισμό, με ελάχιστες θερμίδες.
